J.B. Priestley, in his book “Delight”, about the joys of being alive wrote
“The older I get, the more I delight in plots. I am referring, or course, to fiction and drama, not to real life….”
Having been creating murder mystery plots for the past 30 years as well as writing & directing a number of plays, I can well understand how Mr Priestley feels.
There are many in the theatrical world who delight in nothing more than exposing their audiences to the dark & vulnerable, to the visceral challenges of real life & even a harsh prophecy of how we are all doomed.
However, give me a handful of characters, a mystery that needs solving and a final accusation to be made, and I will delight in the pleasure of secretly plotting – true theatrical entertainment!
